Deutschland, ein Wintermärchen

Heinrich Heine’s most elusive text about Germany is his ‘Wintermärchen’. It describes his journey through a country he loves and hates at the same time. He is riddled by its romanticism, and atracted by it, but he hates especially the rise of militarism and nationalism. I have tried to re-do his journey and see what’s left of what he saw….using the colours in my gum prints of the imperial prussian flag (black and red) as well as those of the liberal germans of the day (yellow, red, black). Pinhole photographs on 4×5 negatives, contact printed with gumprinting.
